Camping at Shakamak State Park

Camping at Shakamak State Park in Indiana is one the most relaxing and laid-back experiences we have had since we started our family camping adventures. The scenery that surrounds the park and it’s three lakes is beautiful and the campground is clean and well maintained. The park has so much to see and explore, join me as I share what this park has to offer for family camping!

Shakamak State Park is located in Southwestern Indiana in Jasonville. The park is heavily wooded and has 3 large lakes to enjoy. We had a full hook-up site at the campground for a week and it was a fantastic way to camp. During the week was pretty quiet but the campground definitely fills up for the weekend. My kids loved riding their bikes around the campground and walking the trail to the fishing pier nearby our camp site. There is also nice playgrounds within the camping areas. The campground has 114 electric sites with 8 full hook-up sites as well as really cute cabins available to rent, many have water access with a pier so bringing a boat along is very popular. There is also a camp store with camping essentials and a nice gift shop.

The 3 lakes are 400 acres of scenic beauty which we explored both on a rented rowboat and by kayak. They also have paddle boats available to rent during the summer months. We had great luck catching panfish there. The rowboats allow electric motor only so they are super calm lakes to float around on or try your luck with fishing.

We found some great spots for shoreline wading and fishing too. The kids loved wading around the shallow water, looking at all of the aquatic life. There is an area that made for a great picnic spot and had plenty of run for the kids to run, run, run! Seeing them so happy being in the outdoors and really enjoying being a kids was awesome!

Exploring the park by bike was a great way to go, my daughter and I would explore all over the park on the many trails. I have enjoyed being able to bring her along on longer rides with our Burley trailer so I get some exercise and we can go farther together. This trailer has gotten many miles with our family and definitely worth the purchase. It used to fit both of the kiddos when they were little and was way better than any stroller. You can check this product out here, I definitely recommend this to any camping family.

OK now back to the park. The Historic Beach House and Aquatic Center are open during the summer months as well as a nice little Nature Center. The Aquatic Center was a great park feature during the hot summer months. And there is some interesting history you can read about at the beach house. This park used to hold diving competitions that brought quite a crowd! The diving platforms are no longer there but it was a big event in years past.

The hiking trails were very cool at this park as well. Although I didn’t get to check them all out, we did see a couple of them and the diversity of nature we saw was intriguing! There was plenty of room to explore this park without ever feeling crowded.

Getting out into nature with your kids is such a great experience and this campground did not disappoint! If you ever get a chance to stay for a week or even a long weekend, Shakamak provides activities for everyone…or the perfect atmosphere to just hang out and relax in nature!
