Fun Kid’s Birthday Cakes

Birthday’s are kind if a big deal in our house and I try to make the celebration extra special each year for my kids. From the decorations to the food to the cake, I like to have a new theme each year. Whatever activity or character my kids are into is usually what I base the theme around and in this post are some fun ideas for boys and girls birthday cakes I created. Most of these cakes start with a basic sheet cake from the local bakery or grocery store then I decorate them at home, this was a big time saver when getting the party together.

For my little girl, I like to get her a special dress for each birthday that goes with the theme. There are many wonderful creators on Etsy that hand make the dresses in any style you could imagine. Here are a few of the themes with dresses and cakes for girls:

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

The Very Hungry Caterpillar was one of my kids absolute favorite books as it is for many children. As I was scrolling through birthday dresses for girls on Etsy I saw this adorable dress and headband set and knew it would be perfect! What could be cuter than a 1 year old Hungry Caterpillar Party! I found lots of cute and inexpensive decorations online and found this cake topper to add to the cake.

Sesame Street – Abbie Cadabbie and Elmo

A Sesame Street theme is a very fun and easy party to plan, there are so many cute ideas on Pinterest and available party supplies online. I also found a cute Abbie Cadabbie dress on Etsy for the party.

Peppa Pig

Despicable Me – Minions

For my son I like to get him a special T-shirt to match his theme. Picking out little party favors and trinkets for the party with him is super fun as well. The kids love to be involved with the planning for their birthdays and while I let them choose the theme I have been taking care of the cake decorating part so far.

Tool Cake

My son loves tools of all kinds, just like Dad! I came up with the below tool cake and made chocolate tools painted with edible sparkle paint. It was such fun making this cake!

Race Cars – Hot Wheels

For this Hot Wheels cake, I cut out a big “3” from cardboard and used that as a stencil for the M&M border, outside I used green frosting for grass and the inside “dirt” road for the car candles.

Garbage Truck

Another favorite for many little boys are garbage trucks, so I figured why not find a little garbage truck toy and have is spilling candy, cookies, and sprinkles over the cake! This was definitely a hit at the party and the best part is there is no wrong way to do this one.

Fishing Cake

For the little fisherman, I created a “bait” container with gummy worms and crushed chocolate cookies for the dirt. Along the base of the cake I added a few chocolate fish. This cake was the catch of the day!

I hope these are some helpful ideas for planning your kid’s next birthday party!
