Making Halloween Chocolate with Kids

Looking for a fun craft with the kiddos this Halloween? There are a few things that always get my kids attention when I ask if they want to create a craft…slime, paint, and chocolate! Creating these cute chocolate treats is super easy and is a great craft for any age. Finish them up with a personalized label for a unique treat for friends, teachers, coaches, anyone!

I have been making candy with my mom since a kid, there are so many great recipes and techniques out there to learn and share. I typically go all out with the candy making at Christmas, but this is a fun activity for any holiday or birthday celebration.

I should add that this project DOES require some adult supervision, whether you melt the chocolates in a double boiler or microwave the kids will need some assistance with this.

Here is what you will need:

  • Melting Chocolates (white or milk chocolate)
  • candy molds
  • Crisco (helps chocolate melt smooth)
  • 2 pots for double boiler (one smaller than the other)
  • candy sticks, clear bags
  • food coloring (optional)
  • awesome personalized tags and twine or ribbon (check out my Etsy store)

The craft is very simple, I used the double boiler method but melting instructions allowed for microwave as well. I find it is easier to scorch the chocolate in the microwave which makes for some gross candy!

Start by filling the boiling pot with water about 1/4 way up. You want there to be enough water to set the chocolate pot in to melt, but not too much that water gets into the chocolate which can ruin it. Once water comes to a boil, turn off the heat and set the chocolate pot into the water. I add about a half spoon of Crisco so that the chocolate melts smooth, you do not need much. Gently mix the chocolate until melted.

Once the chocolate is melted, now you can fill your molds. This is a good part for the kids to help, they can spoon the oozy-melty chocolate into the molds. Takes a little hand-eye coordination on their part, and an apron would be a good idea too. Once the molds are filled, gently tap them on the counter to remove any air bubbles, add the stick and make sure it is covered, and into the fridge to chill for about 1 hour. If want to add some color to you chocolate, a few drops of food coloring and a good mix is all you need to do, or can buy the melting chocolates already colored.

If you have any extra chocolate left over, don’t let it go to waste! Grab some fresh clean strawberries and dip them for delicious treat, or dip pretzels and place onto parchment paper to cool.

Once the chocolate has set in the fridge, they should come out of the mold easily. If there is any extra chocolate that dried outside of the mold just gently trim off with butter knife or kids plastic knife.

Now that the chocolates are done, kids can be creative in wrapping them up to give to friends…or to keep as treat at home too! I like to use small clear baggies and close with a twist tie. Then you can add ribbon and a personalized sticker or tag. Other ideas could be finding some decorative ribbon or twine, add a spider ring, arrange in a small jar or pail. The possibilities are endless and can find all of these festive supplies at a local dollar store

I hope you enjoy this fun and easy chocolate craft and I am sure kids would love to help! I am glad that my kids are old enough to teach some kitchen traditions to and look forward to creating more fun crafts and yummy treats with them in the coming months.
