Amish Sugar Cookie Recipe

Amish Sugar cookies are a sweet, buttery, soft, and crumbly cookie that has a unique taste that is subtly different than regular sugar cookies. Don’t get me wrong – I love all types of sugar cookies, but these are the kind of cookie that takes me right back to my childhood. This is an old recipe from my Grammy that can be made in different variations like glazed, sugared, or mixed with chocolate chips or fruit. But in my opinion this cookie is best served as the recipe states, with a little sanding sugar on top and served with a cup of milk or warm cup of coffee.

A recipe can immediately be judged by the condition of the card or book it is written on, and this recipe has been made so many times the ink has work off! This was our go-to cookie recipe for most of our family gatherings, and making it now with my kids brings back lots of fond memories. The buttery, sweet dough is so good, you can just it eat right out of the bowl! Of course, baking the cookies is part of the recipe, but I always remember my Grammy making a batch of dough for me and my sister to eat. Back when we were being dressed up in those fun 70s and 80s outfits eating cookie dough raw was a joy!

The recipe is quite simple and can be made ahead and stored in the fridge until ready to bake.

Ingredients:

  • I cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 eggs
  • 4.5 cups flour
  • 1 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • sanding sugar for sprinkling

Let’s make some cookies! Pre-heat over to 350 degrees.

  • First, combine the sugars, butter, and oil. Beat well
  • Add 2 eggs to mixture
  • Now add in the cream of tartar, baking soda, salt and vanilla
  • Once combines, mix in 4 and 1/2 cups of flour.

I use a stand mixer for these cookies but a hand mixer can work as well.

Scoop spoon size balls of dough onto a cookie sheet either with a baking mat or parchment paper. Sprinkle with a little sanding sugar on top of cookies before baking.

Bake for 10-12 minutes then set on cooling rack. Grab yourself a tasty mug of milk or coffee and get ready to enjoy!

Want to tray a different variation? I made a quick strawberry cream cheese icing and drizzled over some cookies to try and oh man is that good too! I mixed 1/2 cup of Philadelphia strawberry cream cheese, 1 and 1/2 cups powdered sugar, and 2 Tbs. of milk to make the glaze.

I hope you enjoy making these cookies and enjoy them as much as our family does. Get creative with some toppings or mix-ins, let the kids get involved to help, and make some of your own memories in your kitchen. Happy Baking!
