Camping First Aid Kit

Everyone who enjoy camping and any outdoor activity knows that being prepared is necessary and that should always include having a fully stocked first aid kit. Any adventure can lead to the occasional bump, scrape, headache, or bug bite and in this post I’ll share a great way to pack a family first aid kit organized in a tackle box for easy travel.

I don’t at all claim to be any kind of medical expert, but as a mother I know that having the right supplies to take care of minor issues can make a big difference in having a happy, successful trip or going home early. There are plenty of pre-packaged first aid kits available to purchase, I just chose to step ours up a notch and incorporate basic first aid supplies as well as useful medicines and remedies that our family commonly uses. Having everything in one container also helps in not forgetting to pack something for the trip. This tackle box worked great and the dividers can be moved to accommodate different sizes of supplies.

There are also a lot of free online resources covering basic first aid, below are a couple links I find useful:

American Red Cross is an excellent for all things first aid, you can search all kinds of topics and even find local classes here : https://www.redcross.org/take-a-class/first-aid/performing-first-aid/first-aid-steps

WebMD has a great collection of basic tips here: https://www.webmd.com/first-aid/first-aid-tips

What should be in my first aid kit?

  • Adhesive tape
  • Alcohol wipes
  • Allergy medicine
  • Antibiotic ointment
  • Bandages in different sizes
  • Calamine lotion
  • Cold packs
  • Elastic bandages
  • Gauze rolls and pads
  • Hydrocortisone cream
  • Latex-free gloves
  • Pain relievers
  • Saline wound wash
  • Scissors and tweezers

In addition to the above basic list of supplies needed, below are some extras that I take along as well:

  • Bug bite treatments including bite stick, anti-itch lotion, and Benadryl (Don’t forget the Bug Spray or Bug bracelets for kids!)
  • Neosporin bubbling cleaner makes wound cleaning easier for kids
  • Pepto Bismol for adults and kids
  • cotton balls and pads
  • Vicks baby rub – this is great for congested kids and helps them sleep better if not feeling so well
  • nail file and nail clippers
  • Aloe Vera gel or After sun lotion ( don’t forget to pack the sunscreen too!)
  • extra washcloths
  • ice pack for the freezer or cooler

I hope this first aid kit idea can help you plan for your family’s next outdoor adventure! Please check out some of my other posts about camping, cooking, and creating with kids on Pinterest!
